Police Constable to Undergo Medical Examination in Alleged Assault by Malima MP Case

A decision has been made to subject a police constable to a medical examination in connection with allegations that National People’s Power (NPP) Ratnapura District Member of Parliament Shanta Padmakumara assaulted him.

Police Media Spokesman, Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wootler, stated that there is suspicion the relevant police constable may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Accordingly, the police constable is due to be referred to a Judicial Medical Officer for a medical examination, the Police Media Spokesman said.

The police constable had informed the Police Emergency Call Unit, claiming that MP Shanta Padmakumara assaulted him.

It is reported that the constable, who is attached to the Suriya Kanda Police, was previously involved in a raid that led to the seizure of cannabis belonging to a relative of the said MP in the Embilipitiya area.

Investigations into the incident have been initiated by the Embilipitiya Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit, ASP F. U. Wootler confirmed.

He further stated that preliminary investigations have already been carried out by obtaining CCTV footage from the area where the incident occurred, as well as statements from individuals who were present at the scene.

However, MP Shanta Padmakumara has denied the allegations, stating that he did not assault anyone.

The MP also stated that he has filed a complaint with the Kolonna Police alleging that the police constable stopped his vehicle and threatened him while he was traveling.

Meanwhile, the wife of the police constable stated that her husband had called her by phone on the night of the incident and informed her about the alleged assault.

She further said that she, along with others, later took steps to admit him to hospital.
